Hence the wide-eyed gaze, the tangle of hair around her face and the quick movements of her hands as she goes, trying to learn whatever she can as quickly as she can.
Completely ignoring the feast, Hermione sits to one side, pursing her lips and lifting the map to take a better look at it. After a few moments she takes a few long, deep breaths, leaning back and reciting what she's been told over and over, like a mantra, as she tries to work out what the best way to get home is. She's tried using her magic and that, at least, seems to be working well enough (a quick 'accio' wasn't much of an example, though...)
The entertainment around her might be lovely and she knows that, really, she should eat something, or at least drink something, but she's still in the middle of her mixed panic and confusion and she's really not paying much attention to the world around her. ]

May I be of assistance, child?
no subject
Oh, no, I'm fine... I think. I'm just trying to learn as much as I can about this place before I go and, um. Join in?
no subject
I hear there is a great library, though I cannot say if the way will be barred at this hour. It might be better to eat and rest awhile, to clear your head, before seeking answers. [ A hand slides from behind his back momentarily, gesturing to the loud feast. ] They are not of a mind to help anyone tonight.

You're right, I should eat something, at least, otherwise nothing is going to sink in. [ Standing, she puts her map to one side and offers her hand with a soft smile. ] My name is Hermione - Hermione Granger.

[ Clasping her hand, he gives it a brief shake; an odd custom, but one he observes without faltering. ]
Thranduil of the Woodland Realm — Mirkwood, in the Common Tongue. Well met, Miss Granger. [ Turning slightly, he invites her to the slice of table previously vacated in order to speak with her. ] If you wish to continue perusing your map while you eat, I shall not take offense. I may even join you in this endeavour.

[ She moves forward to take a seat, still a little anxious - but Thranduil seems nice enough and she's actually more comfortable than she imagined she'd be, given the situation. ]
It's very nice to meet you, Thranduil. We can definitely look over it together, if you want. Just a moment -
[ She sits forward, moving a few plates and things around so that there's space for her to spread the map out between them. ]

I know these words. Quendi is an ancient word in a long-lost tongue for the first of the elves, it means "the Speakers", and Brethil was the name of a forest-land long ago claimed by a great king I once knew. I seek to uproot the truth of their appearance on this map on the morrow.

When Janine was human, she wasn't older than fourteen. Now, she's an enormous pterosaur who uses telepathy to speak.]
:First part first. What's your priority one?:
no subject
Is she supposed to reply in her mind? She has no idea. ]
Learning as much as I can about this place.

[Janine's face is unreadable, since it's basically immobile. Her large red eyes are piercing, but her 'voice' is offhandedly kind.]
:Get a bite while they're offering, is my advice.:
no subject
It's a bad habit, I'm afraid. I get a little tangled up in things sometimes - that and I'm not particularly hungry.
no subject
:Then steal some for later. Anyway, you should probably find somewhere quieter to set down, so you can't be bothered.:

Shove a few apples in my bag and make a run for it, then? It sounds a little like dinner time at my old school.

[As the daughter of a bed-and-breakfast owner who was expected to get and keep rooms clean, Janine has a certain disdain for that kind of mess.]

hello yes can i please order one serving of 'cr i didn't know i wanted until just now'
It is hard to be suspicious of a young, studious girl though. She seems to be about Lyanna's age, and far more dedicated to the research than her surroundings. It almost seems rude to interrupt, and yet she makes her way over anyway. She'd rather interrupt another frightened arrival than fake any more smiles for the people feasting to forget home. ]
Are these the lands we have been taken to?
[ She asks the question gently, though she is careful to maintain the tough exterior. She is a Stark of Winterfell if nothing else, and wolves do not scare so easily. Still, some things are easier in theory than in practice, and her smile slips for a moment as she glances at the map. ]
These do not look like anything I have seen.
[ And in that moment, just for a brief instant, she almost looks disappointed. It had been easier believing that she may not be so far from home as she'd initially believed. ]
my heart just caught in my throat A+++ yes please tips you well
It is. I haven't been able to make out too much of it so far, but I'm learning, at least.
[ She shifts forward, using her finger to point to where she was sure they were, across to the station and then back. ]
I think this is where we are, at least right now, and this is the station some people have been talking about. The rest of the things I only really know by name right now, but I'm trying. I'm going to go to the library here as soon as I can.
[ She offers a hand with a soft expression. ]
Hermione Granger.

nevertheless, it's fairly easy to spot the signs when someone else is having a problem. it's the repeated words that actually draw his attention and then he just quietly observes for a few moments before throwing any caution to the wind and moving closer to her. ]
Do you always make a habit of talking to yourself? Or is this just a special occasion?
[ what? it's totally normal and smooth to open with a joke. ]
no subject
It's a bad habit, but this is a special occasion as well.
[ Very smooth, and it's enough to relax Hermione. Closing the map, she shoves it into her bag and stands, holding out her hand slowly. ]
Hermione Granger.
no subject
he takes her hand for just a moment with a bright grin. ]
Tommy Shepherd.
[ then he lets go, rocking back on the heels of his feet. silently, he regards her for a moment, then it's followed by an almost nonchalant sort of shrug. ]
I don't know if I'd say bad. Someone I know does it constantly for his spells.

Your friend has magic too, then? I mean, I'm not sure what the magic of this place is like, exactly, I haven't been able to read much about it at all, but -- do you mind telling me a little more?
no subject
Um, yeah. He's [ ... ] kind of my brother. [ he makes a face with an accompanying hand-flappy type gesture ] Long story. Anyway, he's got a crazy amount of powers that basically god-mode sometimes. Like reality warping type stuff.
[ there's a brief pause and tommy looks around, almost as if making sure—double sure—that billy isn't around. or... anyone he knows for that matter. his voice is kept low as if he's telling a secret. ]
He's actually really great at it and can be kind of scary sometimes, but it's awesome. [ then he straightens, running a hand down the front of his shirt. ] I mean, I still think I'm better, but, y'know, he's good.
hellooo
[ Merlin's beard, it's a relief to finally see someone she knows. It's been crowded enough and she'd been keeping an eye out, weaving through the people and the food and the imps and the fairies and finally, finally a glimpse of bushy hair and she wonders if Harry or Ron are nearby. (They must be, right, they're always together? She hopes.) ]
Hermione— [ She breaks into a jog to get to her faster, throws her arms around her. ] Thank Merlin, I thought it was you. Rotten luck, of course, if we're all stuck in this mad place, but.... [ She leans back to look at her, hands on her shoulders, bright brown eyes searching. ] You alright? Have you seen anyone else? D'you have any idea what's going on?
