ok i'm glad you're here I DIDN'T GET A CHANCE TO TL;DR AT YOU ON THE QUESTIONS MEME BUT I HAVE A LOT OF FEELINGS
so let's lay out that general groundwork by saying that korra is goddamn family and bolin loves her a lot. like she is amazing and beautiful and powerful and the all-around best avatar ever, not that he's biased. he obviously just happens to know and love the people who are the greatest at everything in the world. he can't imagine life without korra anymore and he has no idea where he and mako would even be if it weren't for her because he's shitty at thinking about stuff like that. like he probably tried to think of the overwhelming unlikeliness of korra sneaking into the arena and happening to get caught by toza and him happening to walk by and shit but it was way too big to get hung up on. he loves her and she is like the highest standard of how people should be if they want to be amazing, and she basically saved his family's entire collection of bacon. theres a reason u got both these eyebrow boys hung up on you back then gurl.
a lot of this dynamic from his end comes down to him just really wanting to make her smile and for her to be happy and to realize she is super amazing?? i think he's like that with anyone he considers a friend or family but that sure doesn't make it a less powerful desire. even after everything in canon and each so far he's still kind of had that people-reading problem that carries over into not really being able to imagine korra being nervous or afraid or unsure. like she's always overcome everything in her way she is the boldest!!!1! and so when she admits to stuff like that it makes him kinda sad and makes him want to just make her feel better only he has no idea how so he just kind of ???????? I THINK WITH THE INBOX THREAD THOUGH, HE'S GONNA TRY TO BE MORE MINDFUL OF THAT FROM NOW ON. he's a born hug factory for people with emotional difficulties and an inherent need to be in control/strong SO.
and i think that each stuff has been great for their relationship! they've laughed, they've cried, they've hugged it out, they've nearly lost mako together. SOME SHIT'S GONE DOWN AND THEY'VE GONE THROUGH IT TOGETHER, as opposed to the usual canon setup where they're in different team factions or she's like 100 feet tall in republic city and he's throwing rocks in the spirit world or whatever. and he's really glad that he spined up and did the thing re: telling him things. like it wasn't so much a thing he was holding against her as it is a thing that made him start thinking "welp i better figure out how to make myself more reliable to tell stuff to i guess" and he's trying to work on that but also understands the wanting-to-protect-people thing.... it's complicated bro.

Kaldur is really reasonable and responsible and level-headed no matter what's going on, and being the kind of guy who can't remain objective to save his life and being terrible at confrontation and stuff, Bolin thinks that it's just super super admirable. He trusts Kal with his back as readily and easily as he'd trust Korra or Mako (albeit probably with less telepathic eyebrow communication, but that's an eyebrow-brother thing anyway). I MEAN SURE HE'S EASY TO PASS OUT THE GOOD FAITH BUT IT DOESN'T MAKE THE FAITH ANY LESS POWERFUL.
Kal is Good People he is just all-around such a great guy!! Like when I picture their CR I basically just imagine any of those gifs/videos where an adult dog is just sleeping and minding its own business while a puppy bounces all over the place in front of it and climbs over it and stuff. idk why it's so hard to describe exactly why he likes him so much wow. John's been so consistently easy to talk to, and he humors Bolin talking about whatever and all the varying levels of excitement that go with it so easily. And he's really blunt and honest and doesn't dig bullshit, but he's also patient and sympathetic about stuff???
Bolin's just found it so easy to get attached to him, and he's super fond of John. Like John obviously cares about people and is just a good person and I think that Bolin trusts him a lot. Obviously in the way where he trusts him to have his back (and to have Mako and Korra's backs, and Pabu's back of course), but also in a way where he feels like if he had some kind of issue going on, he could talk to him about it. And he actually kind of feels like he could trust John to be straight about basically anything, which is... a nice break, sort of? Like, Bolin's pretty used to getting kid gloves when it comes to some stuff, and Mako and Korra will sometimes not tell him about things because they don't want to worry him or whatever, but he feels like he can trust that even if John doesn't think he can handle something, he'll be upfront about it? idk it's a dumb complicated thing. earthbenders tend to lean towards the honesty deal and even if bolin's honesty deal is less of the blunt/rude style, he still values it.
